Developing a Robust Packaging Solution for Westbury Group’s Delicate Air Filtration Products

The Client

Since 1969, Westbury have manufactured quality air filters for a range of industries in the UK.

As trusted specialists in air hygiene, filtration products, and management, it’s vital that Westbury’s packaging protects its delicate items to uphold the brand’s high-quality reputation.

With the support of our long-standing partner, Greyhound Box, we were able to develop a versatile packaging solution which meets the demands of our customers.

The Challenge

The manufacturer supplies products to clients that work in a range of demanding environments.

From the light commercial sector to facilities management, there’s often an assumption that Westbury’s air filters are as heavy duty as the industries they manufacture for.

Yet the filters have delicate elements that need adequate protection to ensure they’re stored and transported without running the risk of damage.

Our aim in developing the new packaging was to retain the great benefits of our previous packaging solutions, such as carrying handles and bespoke labelling options, whilst also introducing improvements in construction and incorporating our latest imagery.

Breathing Fresh Air into an Existing Packaging Design

Westbury’s Director, Trevor Povey, asked us to create a bespoke packaging design to house their range of air filtration products.

Box criteria:

  • Robust construction – to protect the delicate filter products
  • Simple and safe to handle – the nature of the filters mean they’re handled a considerable number of times along the value chain
  • Easily identifiable – the products are distributed to a vast number of client locations, so speed is of the essence
  • Inclusion of the Westbury’s latest imagery to enhance brand awareness

Trevor was also keen for the new packaging to keep the following advantageous features as its predecessor.

Retained features:

  • Carrying handles
  • Bespoke labelling options
  • Unbleached and recyclable materials

Strengthening an Already Successful Branded Box

1. Packaging Review

As is the case for all our bespoke branded packaging projects, we started with a review of the current box used to protect the product. Not only does this help us to spot its strengths and where there’s room for improvement, but it gives our team a better understanding of how the package is going to be used.

We continued with the 0201 style thanks to its simple design and usability. We added multi-creases to allow Westbury’s packing team to adjust the height of the box so it can be used to package a number of different products securely.  To meet the need for safe handling, we cut neat holes into the box’s side panels to act as handles.

2. Board Grade Considerations

Selecting one of the strongest and most durable double wall board grades available was key to ensuring the air filters were as protected as possible inside the box.

When it came to the outside, we used an outer kraft liner – it’s the ideal substrate to showcase the new Westbury branding thanks to its high print quality.

A Sustainable Yet Robust Packaging Solution

Sustainability is as important to Westbury as it is to their clients, with the manufacturer making a conscious effort to partner with its customers to ‘maximise product lifespan’.

In its standard ‘earthy’ colour and unbleached form, corrugated cardboard conveys a sentiment of being environmentally friendly. Indeed, the board is 100% recyclable, so sticking with this was a no-brainer.

What’s more, corrugated cardboard is one of the easiest packaging materials to directly print onto to achieve a clean and sleek finish. The new box predominantly uses dark blue ink to present Westbury’s range of products, website address, and social media handles. We incorporated the brand’s secondary tone of sky blue to add a dash of colour (and recognition) to the logo.

This bespoke packaging solution allows us to reduce our environmental impact and enhance efficiencies at our factory.

Spot the Westbury Box!

Westbury required each box to be easily identifiable. And since they asked for us to produce 500 in the first run alone, might seem like quite the feat! But sometimes, the most complex needs have the simplest solutions.

By including the outline of a blank rectangle onto one of the box’s side panels, we’ve helped the manufacturer to easily signpost to packers and clients exactly what’s inside each container. (And where they need distributing to!) Less than two weeks after the order was placed, we manufactured 500 of these Westbury boxes. They’re now being transported to plantrooms nationally.

All in all, the collaboration has been a great success and we can’t wait to see these boxes out there in plantrooms across the country!
